Selling vs. Sharing
The Human Experience in a Data Driven, AI-powered Marketing Race
Picture this: you’re attending a networking event. Appetizers and your favorite beverage (on the company card, if you’re so lucky!), and a swath of both familiar and new industry faces, all packed into a trendy spot downtown. Armed with your business card, you make your way to the new marketing manager or business developer at a firm your firm has been jockeying for work with. You make the elevator pitch, perhaps name drop a few people you have in common for good measure. Efficient. On-message. Memorable? Maybe…
Now try this instead: You walk up, ask about their latest project that just hit the DJC, and swap stories about your mutual struggles with taming the wild subject matter experts with access to their own InDesign templates and a LOT of opinions. There’s laughter, a real connection, maybe even…ding, ding, ding - a future collaboration!
So ask yourself: Are your campaigns handing out polished business cards (algorithm-driven but a little stiff)? Or are they swapping stories (authentic, inspirational)? Why not both? Let AI handle the precision while you bring the spark that inspires engagement.
We all love a shiny new tool, and AI, in all it’s forms and uses, is clearly the shiniest out there right now, sharpening our ability to optimize and target like never before. Algorithms can slice up data points and deliver messages that help your team answer those RFP prompts and sell your firm to a client. But the reality here is this: if all we do is optimize, we risk falling into the trap of selling exactly what everyone else is selling to clients who really want to feel like they are being given personalized solutions. Generic messaging, even when ‘personalized’ based on prompts, loses emotional punch.
This is where “sharing” steps in. It’s the part of marketing that feels less like an ad and more like genuine conversation. It’s telling a story about why a project matters to the community or spotlighting the internal values and nuances that set a firm apart. Vulnerability and human voice aren’t just nice-to-haves – they are what empower trust and loyalty.
Think about it like building a project. Data and AI are your tools. They are the BIM models and the energy dashboards. Storytelling and authenticity? That’s the design intent, the “why” that gives the project meaning. One without the other isn’t enough.
Where AI and selling shine:
Predictive targeting for the right audience at the right time
Streamlined outreach that reduces lift for marketing teams
Messaging at a scale
Where humans can share:
Crafting narratives that resonate beyond metrics
Anchoring campaigns in brand values, not just trends
Building community through voice and dedicated, intentional connections
The challenge facing AEC and CRE marketers today isn’t the ‘threat of AI’ replacing jobs. It’s learning the delicate balance of ‘selling’ and ‘sharing’ and marrying AI optimization with the classic tools of the industry. AI can help us sell smarter, but it’s our human-centered stories that help us share better. In today’s landscape, the brands that thrive will be the ones who know when to hand the mic to the algorithm and when to step in and speak from the heart.
Because in the end, the future of marketing isn’t “either/or.” It’s “yes, and.”
Oh, and also, how boring would it be to just talk metrics and data points at all these networking events? Step aside, ChatGPT, this a job for the water cooler stories.
